Valuations for Expropriation Purposes

Expropriation, or more plainly, the compulsory transfer of land to the government for the completion of a public works project, is a power possessed by governments all across the globe. The process by which this action is governed however, varies from region to region but in most countries, including Canada and the United States, the owner of any appropriated land is entitled to fair and reasonable compensation, usually defined as the fair market value of the property.

Ordinarily, expropriation for a “public use” can be expansively defined along the lines of public “safety, health, interest, or convenience”. The most common example of expropriation for “public use” is the construction or expansion of public roads or highways. Public use could also include the construction of schools or municipal buildings, a public park, or to redevelop blighted property or neighborhoods.
